I had also received the bad reviews beforehand, but it didn't stop me from going to the cinema. In retrospect I'm glad I went, because in my eyes this film has a few strong sides.

Ok, I admit right away that the enamel sometimes falls off your teeth because of the enormous drama that characterizes the film. Frankel also takes too much on his fork to give just about all the characters in the film a heavy burden on his or her shoulders. Compare that to the relatively short playing time and you notice that not everything is worked out well and the film is sometimes not in balance.

But film is not just staring at a screen and analyzing what you see. Your feelings can also play a role as far as I'm concerned and I have to admit that the film captivated me from start to finish. Let it all be what it is, the film certainly has its strengths. For example, Norton and Mirren are on a roll, but actually the entire cast just acts strong. The film also has a pleasant setting, especially around Christmas it puts you in the right atmosphere. Add to that the fact that they are certainly not all dialogues that have no depth, but occasionally even make you think. And that a few violins are just a bit too thick in emotional scenes, so be it.

I enjoyed it and will recommend everyone to see the film.

Ample.

“Just make sure you notice the collateral beauty.”

You can raze this film to the ground if you want. Collateral Beauty is oversentimental, has a lot of tile wisdom and 'corny' dialogues, has too many subplots, wants to cram too much drama into an hour and a half and rams the emotions down your throat through the swelling music and the aforementioned dialogues.

All true, but if you don't bother yourself too much with some things, there is plenty to enjoy. The film has a strong message, great actors, even some humor and genuinely beautiful scenes. Smith, Norton and Mirren are excellent but most of the credit should go to Naomie Harris. She is unparalleled and has the best scene from the film together with Smith at the end. It sounds cliché, but Collateral Beauty has its heart in the right place and especially wants to give you a warm (Christmas) feeling. Nothing wrong with that…

Boy...how much do I have a soft spot for Will Smith when he's in a drama. The sadness, the pain, his powerlessness: it comes in like a sledgehammer blow.

No vain hopes, no beautiful stories, but real life. In which you still have choices to make through all the storm. But everything in time. *4.0
