In 1940, a war-wounded man tries to rethink his past. He thinks back to the time when the Nazis invaded Poland. There the American reporter Carole Peters met the Polish pilot Stefan Radetzky, who also turns out to be a piano virtuoso. Stefan is one of the last to escape from Warsaw. Months later, in New York, he and Carole meet again and they get married. But the thought of Stefan having to go back to fight turns out to be too much for Carole, who is also worried about his music career.
