Wonderful romantic comedy about a smart farmer's daughter who moves to the big city and accidentally ends up in political circles. Before she knows it, she's running for a congressional seat herself. Excellent chemistry between Joseph Cotten and Loretta Young, who surprisingly won an Oscar with her role. It's true that it's an oldie, which criticizes the American political system between the lines, but it's still good for over an hour and a half of light-hearted and relaxed entertainment.

Loretta Young gives a masterclass in comedy in her Academy Award-winning role as Katrin Halstrom, a farmer's daughter who comes to work as a maid for politician Glenn Morley [Joseph Cotten] and his mother Agatha Morley [Ethel Barrymore] as they prepare for the elections to the House of Representatives. Katrin may be of simple origin, but with her common sense and her determination, she soon proves indispensable. But trouble arises when she voices her opinion about the candidate the Morleys want to support.

Young steals the film, but the acting is strong across the board. Harry Davenport has a small but hilarious part as the Morleys' GP, there's a nice score by Leigh Harline and director HC Potter keeps the pace fast making this a joy from start to finish.

Romantic comedy where a peasant girl comes to work in a senator's household, falls in love with him, but she herself joins the opposition. It's all a bit too sweet. There is some mud thrown, but we now know an American policy that catapults this 1947 variant very much to the great fairy tale book. Oscar for Loretta Young in a role that may have been modern at the time, but now also comes across as the poor helpless naive girl.
