It's because this film won the Oscar for Best Picture that, otherwise, it would have been forgotten, I think. It wasn't that captivating. A wealthy family is followed from 1900 to 1933. All sorts of important events are recounted, and naturally, the family is involved. It's all handled in a bombastic and oversentimental way. Eighty years later, that seems rather dull. One part did stand out: a scene with interwoven images of WWI battlefields and blaring music. That looked quite decent, and it captures the madness of war well.

Calvacade is the last remaining Oscar-winning film I hadn't seen yet. It's a relatively unknown film, and I didn't go into it with particularly high expectations. And yes, it's clearly not a grand masterpiece, which undoubtedly made a much greater impression in the 1930s than it does now.

It tells the life stories of several people who experienced and survived various important events, but also those who didn't. For example, the First World War plays a significant role, as does the voyage on the Titanic. I agree that it all doesn't really form a cohesive whole, and there's clearly a bit too much jumping around. This makes it all rather detached, and you never really connect with the characters. There are some nicely shot bits interspersed, but it never really becomes compelling.

Calvacade clearly hasn't stood the test of time either. It's one of the weaker Best Picture Oscar winners and, aside from a few moments, ultimately not all that interesting.

The film was likely praised at the time for its subject matter, but as a film, it's largely a dull affair, overshadowed by its much better contemporaries. While the idea is a good one, the execution isn't particularly interesting.
