Rich but untrustworthy mine owner Nicholas Rood finds a black Mexican voodoo doll on his desk and now knows that he will be revenged for killing his former business partner. A knife is thrown at Nicholas while he is talking to his daughter Marian and he dies. Marian then seeks support from her fiancé Nick Halstead, who is a private investigator. Nick finds six people who could have a motive for Nicholas's murder: his sister Laura Leland, her son Rex Leland, heirs Mallison Rood and Walling, servant Esteban and Doctor Giddings. Sheriff Renick and his deputy Red can't make sense of Nick's clues, but Nick thinks he can pinpoint the culprit.
