Nice, but not spectacular courtroom drama feels a bit old-fashioned, especially in the approach to the court case that takes up a large part of the film. Humphrey Bogart plays lawyer John Morton who tries to convince the jury that Nicky Romano [John Derek], despite his criminal background, is not the one who shot and killed a witness during a bank robbery. In flashback we learn a little more about how Nicky ended up in crime and how he slowly worked his way up in that dark world. George Macready, with a clearly visible scar, is the prosecutor who uses every means to undermine his opponent's plea. Not bad of its kind, but since then the courtroom drama has developed considerably and films (including 12 Angry Men (1957) and Inherit the Wind (1960) which are much more convincing.

Reasonable film in which a lawyer represents a young man accused of murder. An entertainingly structured courtroom drama through the flashbacks and also some social drama (something that is best expressed during the best scene of the film: Humprey Bogart's final speech). However, the character of the accused young man does not really seem believable.
