Tank Force! plot
"Born out of the blazing passions of war!"
Five Allied soldiers are captured in the Libyan desert during World War II and taken to a POW camp in Italy. The five are American David Thatcher (Victor Mature), Sergeant Kendall (Leo Genn), a Polish soldier (Bonar Colleano), one Bartlett (Sean Lelly) and Private 'Tiger' Noakes (Anthony Newley). The Germans seem to have a special interest in Thatcher, and this is compounded when he and his fellow soldiers try to escape several times.

On Monday afternoon, I started a mini movie marathon, beginning with Tank Force. I was initially looking for Tank Battalion but ended up with this one. So then this one; the average ratings aren't great, but without being terrible, it's actually nothing special.
The opening is actually quite okay, with a nice desert scene, fierce fighting, and plenty of rolling stock—not everything necessarily from WWII, but that is something that can be overlooked. It is truly utter misery to drive around in such a scorching hot, uncomfortable, stinking oven, with the prospect of suffocating, being torn apart by splinters, or otherwise being burned alive. And there aren't very many films about tank battles in the desert, so it's not bad up to that point. But then the film suddenly shifts to something completely different, leaving you wondering if I am still watching the same thing...
For suddenly we are following a hodgepodge of nationalities in captivity, the word 'escape committee' pops up regularly—something that would yield many points in Scrabble—and the film no longer reminds one of the beginning or the content a film titled Tank Force would have, because where have the tanks gone? Is it bad, then? Nah... not necessarily, as it is in itself quite an adventure revolving around men on the run who find themselves moving from one situation to another. So it isn't necessarily bad, but it otherwise contains little that is special or memorable. Therefore, a narrow failing grade as far as I am concerned...
