Jeanne is a woman from a wealthy family whose life becomes one big valley of tears when she marries Julien Delamare. Based on Guy de Maupassant's book of the same name which focuses more on the psychological analysis than on the events that affect the psyche in question. This is a character study that director/screenwriter Stéphane Brizee and co-screenwriter Florence Vignon have stripped almost completely of the melodramatic action. The camera is mostly static and mainly records the face and emotions of main character Jeanne, who mainly muses about life as it was or (my interpretation) a highly idealized version of it combined with daydreams about how it could have been. As a viewer, we do not experience most soap-like developments, but present the film as a fait accompli, so that we are mainly stuck with a violently wallowing in self-pity Jeanne. The few moments in which we are allowed to witness Jeanne's tragic moments are also the only moments when the camera, and with it the film, comes to life. For the rest you are actually watching a passive, unsympathetic character in a soap without a soap. Then there is not that much left, even though it is all very nicely portrayed.

The oppression of a woman's life without self-determination or freedom of movement. Or how director Stéphane Brizé stripped Guy de Maupassant's debut novel 'Une Vie' (1883) of any frills or grandeur. More of a socio-realistic environmental sketch than a romantic costume fantasy. It turns 'Une Vie' (2016) into a poignant film about the few ways in which Jeanne Le Perthuis des Vauds (Judith Chemla) can escape the cruelties of the men in her life. The protagonist may be the daughter of a baron, but her financial prosperity weighs less than the social expectations of her womanhood. Also played so very well by Judith Chemla (I didn't know her from previous roles) as a young woman who gets further and further away from her own desires and childhood dreams. As she resignedly refuses to make the most of her marriage and motherhood, while it hits hard when the realization sinks in what a cruel fate has befallen her. It turns 'Une Vie' (2016) into a slowly dormant volcano in which sparse emotions come in like a hammer blow.

Unremarkable story about a rich man's daughter who becomes entangled in the patriarchy and her golden cage. Well made well.
