De Grote Schaduw van Stampersgat plot
The heart of the sugar industry once beat in the Westhoek of North Brabant, with three large sugar factories, including one in Stampersgat. However, since 1 June 2006, the European subsidy for sugar beet cultivation has expired, with major consequences for the village where almost all residents work in the sugar industry. Also the filmmaker's father, who is so fond of sugar that he even sprinkles it on his chips. Filmmaker Patrick Bus films the loss of the village, but also the loss of his parents' marriage, which, after his father retired, no longer runs smoothly. The decline of the sugar industry also has major consequences for other family members and villagers. For example for cousin Gustav, who wants to take over the farm from his parents, but is there still a future for that? And does his father actually want to hand over the farm to him?
