Meaningless.

In my opinion, underwater horror is often fun to watch, but this film manages to make such an interesting concept as boring as possible. The Rift takes the concept of being uninspired very literally and unfortunately this is clearly reflected in the end result.

What could and should have been a fun sea monster movie has now mainly turned into an hour and a half wait. Waiting for something to come, then never coming. However, on paper it sounds nice, and the monster also promises something. It's a shame that they are so secretive about the creature even though it is already very visible on the poster.

The film has enough status actors and actresses to cheer it up a bit as a whole, but it doesn't get very far. Only Ermey plays a nice character with a type that really suits him. Furthermore, we mainly look at the obvious good-or-bad guys. They don't get much depth, nor a face. They honestly don't even seem to try.

As the film progresses the amount of action increases, but the amount of interest from my side does not. It's a shame that this film takes place so much inside a boat, because it could have scored with the underwater images. You don't actually see much of the monster, the film tries very hard not to show the creature. And yet again it is so clearly stated on the poster.

The Rift is an interesting film if you read the synopsis, but if you watch the film itself it quickly becomes clear that the film is not going to be very fun. What should have been a fun popcorn movie takes itself way too seriously and ultimately becomes a relatively boring and meaningless movie that you forget after just a week. Shame.

Bargain basement ripoff of underwater horror films such as Deepstar Six and Leviathan, with particularly wooden acting and lousy special effects. In the cast we find surprising names such as R. Lee Ermey and Ray Wise, but neither of them make much of an appearance here. There's very little to it all, with a laughably simplistic plot, cheap sets and a complete lack of visual flair. Well, towards the end there are a few nice bloody moments, but that's about it.
