Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie plot

"The Power Is On!"

The nefarious Ivan Ooze is accidentally freed after 6000 years of captivity. As befits a true villain, after his liberation he wants to take revenge on the one who imprisoned him, and of course conquer the world. It's up to the Power Rangers to stop him, only this is complicated when Ooze takes on Zordon, causing the Power Rangers to lose their powers. As a last resort, the Rangers seek the Great Power on the planet Phaedos, which is not without danger.

Power Rangers... Didn't find anything about it in the past, and the film can't change that either.

It starts off pretty flashy but it quickly sinks into boring monotony. The use of terrible effects also detracts from the film. Nevertheless, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has its nice moments thanks to the humor, the bad guys and that oh-so-wrong 90s look. The most entertaining are the fights in the last 20 minutes which raise the film somewhat.

Still, I much prefer the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which are just a lot more fun in terms of characters than the superficial bland Power Rangers.

I well remember how half of our class watched the public broadcaster and always came to school with stories about Villa Achterwerk and Buurman en Buurman, while the other half thought these were boring pre-school programs with a horrific lack of violence. Yes, I was in the last group and after watching the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie again yesterday I'm still sure I was on the right side and not on the side of the silk socks that don't drink alcohol today drink because my wife prefers not to and go to bed early every night. (Yes, this whole intro is meant to be ironic and should not be taken too seriously unless you clearly identify yourself in my description)

Holy shit, I can still see why I loved this series as a kid! Basically it's just a combination of Kanji and kung fu movies with all the 'swoosh' sounds, over the top flips and jumps and big monsters destroying cities. The story is grubby, the dialogues are horrific, but the movie is so incredibly entertaining that it doesn't matter at all. And to be fair, the action really isn't that much worse than most of those exaggerated kung fu movies where everyone is jumping around, it's just very bloodless and at times it's very clear that the stairs are wrong.

Jason David Frank is a badass by the way. Not only is he clearly the best real martial artist of the group of teenagers, the fact that he used to show me that the cool guys had long hair also helped me a lot to moan about my own (long) hair. to endure. The fact that the best man is breaking through in the MMA world right now makes him even more cool. Go go Power Rangers!

So, this movie is equally bad. It's not even fun for nostalgia - I used to be a big fan of the Power Rangers, only I've never seen this movie.

I've seen something back later on, so I knew what to expect, but somehow you hope to still have a feeling from the past. None of that. I just couldn't see through the acting, bad timing jokes kill me, I missed Angel Grove High just like the Green Ranger (I never liked the White one) and the old gang (I didn't like those three replacements either) et cetera etcetera. Then I'll at least be waiting for the Zords to come, but if they consist of very ugly computer animation then it stops.

Funny that Angel Grove is so obviously Sydney, I wondered why. 0.5*.
