Le Mans plot

"Steve McQueen takes you for a drive in the country. The country is France. The drive is at 200 MPH!"

One of the toughest car races in the world: Le Mans in France. The race lasts 24 hours over a 14.5 km track, a normal road that will be closed for this occasion. The two drivers per car alternate every few hours. However, it remains a challenge to maintain concentration and keep the material whole. The duel between the German Stahler in a Ferrari 512LM and the American Delaney in a Gulf Team Porsche 917 is nerve-racking. Delany is driving under high pressure, having caused a serious accident the previous year that killed his friend.

Certainly not only enjoyable for Formula I fans or engine freaks.

No, an interesting movie that starts as a documentary with a lot of explanation about the event and even a few minutes in real time.

The most remarkable thing about this film is the clever creation of atmosphere around this mastodon sporting event and of course the truly spectacular images of the races, where the emphasis is strongly on the great risk of injury, lifelong disability and death of the pilots.

There are hardly any side stories and romance and therefore do not distract from the real theme.

Steve McQueen feels good in such a role.

Groundbreaking film about one of the toughest car races in the world: Le Mans in France. This almost feels like a documentary, with sparse dialogue and a very detailed approach to the whole thing. The camera work, especially on and around the road, is fantastic and still manages to impress, fifty years later. The actors come second, but McQueen is as cool as ever.
