We are four years later. Hollywood has been purged by McCarthyism and Hollywood. And again in semi-documentary style. The source, of all things, is a propagandistic article in Readers Digest by none other than the powerful (and rather questionable) FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The movie isn't much better than Walk a Crooked Mile yesterday. Less so in some ways. The FBI agents here are just a bunch of boring characters. In yesterday's movie, they were much more interesting. As a result, yesterday's film, although even less credible, is a bit juicier. The descriptive voice over works just as badly and is again stiff and the communists in particular are not credible for a moment.

This is much more of a producer's film than a director's film. Director Alfred L. Werker was a hard worker, but few of his mostly low budget films still generate any interest. The producer Louis de Rochemont had been a pioneer of semi-documentary noir and specialized in it. De Rochemont was friends with Hoover and looked over his shoulder more.
