The arrival of Dr. Robert Richardson to a village in Nova Scotia proves to be a turning point for Belinda, a young, deaf-mute woman. The doctor teaches her sign language and lip reading, thus liberating her from her isolation. When she becomes pregnant as a result of a rape, it is rumored that Dr Richardson has abused her. The population is not only turning against the doctor, but also against Belinda.

Lew Ayres, who enjoyed great popularity in previous years as Dr Kildare, plays here... a noble doctor! Dr Robert Richardson [Ayres] arrives in a village in Nova Scotia where he soon takes care of Belinda [Jane Wyman], a deaf and mute woman. By teaching her sign language and lip reading, she blossoms and falls in love with the doctor. But her happiness comes to a brutal end when one of the residents rapes her.
This is unadulterated melodrama, with a wonderful, fitting score by master composer Max Steiner. Ayres radiates warmth and sympathy and Wyman gives a controlled, moving performance as the deaf woman, a performance that won her the Oscar for best actress. Definitely a must-see, despite the very melodramatic twists in the last half hour.

I had to see this one, I think it's also a classic that I can relate to
proposals, with an Oscar for Wyman. Wyman also does an excellent job as a deaf and mute girl
but I thought that the film was mainly carried by Lew Ayres, who was friendly and
benevolent newcomer in a village community that was suspicious in advance
comes with compromising assumptions.
Actually all the roles are fulfilled well, while the community including the environment
of rural simplicity, atmospheric and touchable. Emotion and
sentiment that the film ultimately focuses on is also anything but contrived and you get it
all very natural and believable.
A refreshing film that initially takes you along pleasantly, almost silently
halfway through, gradually attracting more sympathetic attention. With a certain climax on
the end.

A film with the necessary potential, but unfortunately it doesn't do much for me. Still, beautiful images and some good acting. Unfortunately, everything remains too superficial for me. Perhaps due to the makers' struggle with the Hollywood rules of the time. The film ultimately won 1 of no fewer than 12 Academy Awards! In the meantime it is a bit outdated, but it is certainly never bad.
