A Room with a View plot

"Open your heart"

Lucy Honeychurch is a young woman from the wealthy nineteenth-century middle class. She travels to Florence in Italy with her chaperone Miss Bartlett. At the hotel, it turns out that their room doesn't have the view they expected. Finally a Mr Emerson and his son George hand over their room to the ladies. A few days later, George kisses Lucy without asking permission! Back in England, the young lady becomes engaged to Cecil, a snooty asshole. George and his father come to England not much later and rent a place in Lucy's neighborhood. When George learns that she is engaged to Cecil, he tries to convince her to choose him and the true love.

Less good than the 1985 version.

This new version was released as a TV movie in 2007. The script largely follows EM Forster's book, but has been slightly modified. The cast is moderately composed. mr. Emerson and George (Timothy Spall and Rafe Spall), are also father and son in real life. This film was dedicated to Fernando Ghia.

This version is basically superfluous. The whole thing seems very rushed in contrast to the 1985 version. This explains why the 2007 version was rushed in less than half an hour.

With difficulty 2.5 *

Apparently a renewable edition of the 1985 film. Too bad, because I didn't realize that at first. It's hard to compare since I haven't seen the first one either. But this stiff British costume drama that tends more towards a romantic film is quite plump.

Arrogance and contempt for anything out of class is commonplace. We're talking 1912. One might as well have been on the Titanic. WWI is imminent, but no one in Europe realizes that yet. The wealthy class is still tripping with exclusive trips to Florence and Roma. Just a pity that it is full of Italians …

The romantic story is such a classic. Being engaged to the wrong person and after many denial phases and chance encounters, everything comes back to normal. It was all so easy, so fast. Little time to deepen the plot. And that can be seen.

Here and there some beautiful images from Italy or the countryside. Otherwise a very mediocre movie.
