French Cancan plot

Paris 1890s. Henri Danglard owns the ailing café 'Le Paravent Chinois', where his girlfriend Lola de Castro performs as a belly dancer. He travels to Montmarte where the cancan, an old-fashioned dance, is still danced. He comes up with the idea of initiating a revival of the cancan in order to gain more business for his cafe, and takes the dancer Nini for performances, but once home Lola becomes jealous.

"Tout ça ne vaut pas l'amour" is the last song that brings the closing show in this film and that is actually incorrect in this case because the Moulin-Rouge spectacle that closes the film is much more valuable than the romantic squabbling that there is. precedes.

Colorful film that indeed draws on the performances in this Parisian amusement theater par excellence.

Some special passages like that are the short songs that French singing idols ala Patachou, André Claveau and Edith Piaff bring. Also a striking appearance by Philippe Clay, Maria Felix lets her "r's" roll nicely and Françoise Arnoul (whom I especially remember in her role in "Le Fruit Défendu", the only film in which Fernandel played a serious character) plays the role of her to live.

Beautiful decors reminiscent of what Toulouse-Lautrec put on canvas and other scenes from paintings ("L'Absinthe") come to mind.

Classic story with a classic, happy and frivolous, light-hearted ending.

Jean Renoir's homage to the Moulin Rouge and the Belle Epoque. Renoir, son of the famous painter, pays a lot of attention to composition and color splendor in this technicolor film. The plot seems to be less important here and is not of that nature to take root. It is mainly “the show must go on” and that also has something. It is certainly not a historical story about the Moulin Rouge, although it does contain some historical elements (dancer Nini). Acting performances may be there. For Renoir this was his first film after his return from the USA and also a reunion with Jean Gabin who was also a bit searching. Nice reunion but not grand as in previous work. Although that is not a measure for enjoying this film.
