Harrison Ford's first credited film role. Actor George Hamilton was dating President Johnson's daughter at the time. As soon as she visited Hamilton on set, she was protected by the Secret Service. Roger Corman withdrew as co-producer a few weeks after production, and was replaced as director by Phil Karlson. Monte Hellman was replaced as editor. Stella Stevens was cast in the role of Emily Biddle, but she turned down the offer. Harry Joe Brown wrote a personal check for $1,000,000 to Columbia Pictures. This is to cover the costs of the exceeding budget.

A mediocre western with little attention to nuance. It all looks very amateurish, and the biggest point of irritation was Max Baer Jr.'s acting. He plays the role of a crazy soldier, who starts giggling incessantly once he has committed a murder.
