Headless Horseman plot

"Don't lose your head"

A group of elderly college students are on their way, in their van, to a Halloween party and take a shortcut through the woods. The van breaks down, but they are helped by young local resident Candy, whose father runs the garage in the nearby village. The villagers are more than a little quirky, everything is shrouded in mist and after someone from their group is found beheaded, our heroes decide to flee immediately. However, there are some major problems: the van is still not running, the villagers don't want them to leave and the Headless Horseman prevents their flight on every road they take.

Before director Anthony C. Ferrante became known for his contributions to the SyFy universe, there were films like Headless Horseman, which come across with considerably more passion and atmosphere. It also helps that the animated effects are kept to a reasonable minimum, so that the practical effects have more room to stand out. The concept in which victims must be explicitly decapitated provides an ideal excuse for this, and Ferrante conjures up a number of graphic murders in this way. The atmosphere is otherwise well present, despite the somewhat cheap design of the location. The choice to have part of the horror take place in daylight is also not very strong, but Headless Horseman is entertaining and offers enough in terms of horror to not collapse. A little more focus on the Halloween period (in which it takes place) would have been welcome and therefore just not sufficient.
