The Racket plot

Captain McQuigg is an upstanding Irish police chief in Chicago. He gets into a fight with mob boss Nick Scarsi, who can't bear the fact that McQuigg can't be bought. When even an attempt on his life fails, McQuigg is transferred to a suburb through Scarsi's political friends so that he is no longer in the way. But that's beyond McQuigg's sense of honor and he sets out to bring Scarsi to justice.

An early gangster movie. The first half of the film contains quite a bit of action, which creates certain expectations. Afterwards, however, the tension drops a bit, with a lot of talking back and forth (so in a silent). Nevertheless, worth a look. All the elements of the gangster movie are already there - police who want to but can't, corrupted government, crooks' faces, underlying cynicism - and moreover, this film was made about and during one of the genre's favorite periods: Prohibition. The actors - unknown to me - do their job well, without being overly theatrical. Praise to director Lewis Milestone for the excellent shooting of the action scenes. His cameraman Tony Gaudio (he has the perfect first name for the gangster genre) would later participate in classics such as Little Caesar and High Sierra.

One of three nominees for best picture at the Oscars of 1927-1928. It didn't win then, but it remains a solid silent film. About the cat and mouse game between a mafia boss and a police inspector. Perhaps also not unimportant is the setting and time of Prohibition, in which the prohibited alcohol (production and consumption) entered the illegal market.

A solid gangster film, without a doubt. I cannot say whether the nomination was deserved, but I can say that it was fine that it did not win the Oscar, without wanting to detract from the film. Quite an interesting plot, but certainly not memorable. Nice to have seen it. Camera work, for example, is certainly up to standard, taking the test of time into account.
