And yet another José Giovanni film on Netflix, my third. This time he took care of the story himself. None other than Georges Delerue signed for the music (according to IMDb he has almost 400 composer credits, I mainly know him from Le mepris). But ultimately it is first and foremost an Alain Delon show. Like Giovanni's other films, Comme un boomerang also has a multiple story. At first it seems to be a 'child in prison, legal game' plot. But then suddenly it turns around and Delon turns out to be a former gangster and the film ends in a real escape flick. The relationship between father and son also goes much deeper than it first seems, in a number of beautiful dialogues with prison glass in between. I have to say that Comme un boomerang sometimes seems a bit rudderless because of this and it is stylistically the least distinctive of the three Giovannis I saw. Still, the man can film very well, which he convincingly proves in separate moments: Delon walking through a casino is such a moment (Goodfellas, anyone?), or later when Batkin senior drives like a madman to the prison. The denouement is exciting and the last shot, a suggestive freeze, very strong, with Delerue providing the uncanny final chord.

Delon plays in his usual way a wealthy successful man with a dark past. From the prosperity he wants to pass on to his son, he comes into contact with the drug flow that increased rapidly in Europe in the 70s. In itself a father-son relationship, in which the son puts his father on a pedestal after his deed and before that actually saw him little to never. The link with the world of today is beautifully reflected in the absence of fully dedicated and competent parenting. The chasing journalism that sets the tone for the perception of the majority of the population is also striking and still very topical. "You who are without sin, cast the first stone..."
