For a good 45 minutes, it is a lot fresher than The Ring and Champagne that I saw last week, but the last 45 minutes (I also saw the version of over 90 minutes) are barely passable. Not that that was worse, but these kinds of stupid films lose my attention at some point. I find these films suitable when form plays a role or as slap stick (where form and image are important), but I can't have this kind of comedy or drama. Because of the barrier that there is no sound, because of the exaggerated pelvic twitching, etc., I am unable to sympathize as films can do so beautifully. I always have the feeling that I am watching a performance and I don't get lost in that world. It's fun for a while, then not anymore. And there is nothing special to say about this Farmer's Wife either. No special shots, a nice but predictable story and unremarkable acting (not even in the category of silent films). a striking number of intertitles, while Hitch can normally say a lot with just images. 1.5*.

The extremely popular play of the same name could only be successfully translated to the silver screen by removing almost all dialogue and with the help of his regular writer Elliot Stannard, Hitchcock managed to convey the humor mostly through visual means. He also appears to be quite skilled at slapstick, although this comedy mainly relies on the excellent work of the cast. Jameson Thomas stars as the middle-aged farmer who, after the death of his wife, thinks he can only keep his farm afloat if he can find a new wife. With some help from his faithful housekeeper [Lillian Hall-Davis], he comes up with a list of three candidates. Maud Gill, Louie Pounds and Olga Slade are hilarious as the three rather different potential brides, but Gordon Harker steals the film as the gruff farmhand.

Every week I watch a Hitchcock and then discuss it with a colleague. I had never seen this The Farmer's Wife before. Expectations were low based on the title and some stills I saw. But the proverb don't judge a book by it's cover also applies here. It's a good comedy - based on a theater farce. The way the farmer speaks about the women is rude and hilarious. Visually it is a very beautiful film in which we get a view of the British countryside of 100 years ago. Hitchcock was also at the top of his profession in the 1920s and he shows this with his expert direction and photography. Of course this film is not one of the Hitchcock classics - because there is no suspense - but it is a solid, high-quality comedy from the silent years.
