Dafoe plays an excellent role in a very calm and atmospheric film. The big disadvantage, however, is that everything is so aimless and the film actually doesn't work anywhere. Tension is completely lacking and that's a shame. With a more carefully worked out screenplay, this film would have made more of an impression. Now they remain nice but fragmentary scenes that are strung together by a convincing Dafoe. But to be honest, he deserved better than this.

This movie did surprise me. I was expecting a bit of a straight forward thriller, but it certainly wasn't. Visually, this was a brilliant movie to watch. I thought it had a bit of an atmosphere a la Seven.

The visual aspect is clearly the strongest point in the film and the director has put a lot of effort into that and it has succeeded. Unfortunately, I found the story to be subordinate. The how and why of the killer is never discussed and although it is exciting to keep some mystery, when you watch a murder case you want to know was the killer.

I found the ending very rushed. Again, no how and why. The death scene (?) I found very impressive. It is that the images were beautiful to look at otherwise I would have given a much lower rating.

Anamorph feels like a missed opportunity to me. The basics are pretty standard and all the actions in the film are anything but original. Dafoe does not really put down a sympathetic role and we have also seen his character many times, but better. An agent haunted by a case from the past who finds it necessary not to work with anyone and wants to solve everything alone. Been there, done that!

What made the film even more appealing to me were the creative killing spree. That caused me a kind of tension that made me curious for a long time about who and what exactly is going on with these murders.

Unfortunately it ends a bit dull (I would like to see a motif with these kinds of films) and I am left with the feeling that I have been watching a real in-between work. It's never really bad, but it's never really good either.

2.5*
