"Death on the road."
A cyclist is run over by a car. The culprits, a man and his wife, commit a hit-and-run. When they later learn that the victim has died from his injuries, they are haunted by their conscience.

A gripping psychological study of adultery, guilt, blackmail, and selfishness, which vigorously satirizes the morals of the upper class. Gloomy filming; even the streets are perpetually dark and wet. Of all the films I've seen by her, this is the best performance by the attractive Lucia Bosè.
Beautiful, but gloomy film that won't make you happy.

Moralistic film about how people react in such a situation, especially the woman does not come off too well morally because she urges the man to drive away, afraid that her adultery will be discovered.
Then tension has to be built up through some sort of (I know what you did last summer-like scenario), but this time an acquaintance of the woman who wants to blackmail the two by suggesting that he knows everything.
It all doesn't work that well, the aloofness and the philosophical dialogues make the film more boring.
The ending is daring and in a way realistic but certainly not an ode to humanity (the man still wants to do the morally good but the woman clearly thinks differently and ultimately chooses for herself) in a very extreme way.
