A forgotten gem. Ingmar Bergman's script contains strong dialogues and characters with psychological depth. Themes are discussed that were still taboo in Hollywood under the Hays code.

Martin must choose between the good woman Flora and the femme fatale Rut - a classic dilemma between reason and passion. Flora is domestically dressed, adapts to the role of a dutiful wife, but is shrewd enough to recognize the smell of Rut's perfume. Rut is often dressed in black, like a seductive avenging angel. Like a black widow, she lures men into her web to torture them afterwards. She has made a painting of her stepfather Victor, whom she calls Satan. In an emotional scene, she confronts Victor about the fact that he sexually assaulted her when she was twelve. This offers a psychological explanation for why she has come to hate men in general.

A theme like child sexual abuse with its traumatic consequenceswas groundbreaking at the time. The subject of prostitution is also discussed in passing. The title refers to the fact that Martin is obsessed with Rut's body, but cannot picture her face.

Gustaf Molander's direction is influenced by film noir. Shadows and rain are used to create atmosphere, mirrors to enlarge the space. In the smoky hotel bar, a pianist plays Cole Porters Night and Day. The camera angles are varied, including a shot through a banister.

Nice poster indeed! Pretty typical 40s and 50s femme fatale movie. With such a narrator who also walks around in the whole (think of The third man). Gunn Wållgren splashes off the screen, with a frankly beautiful face. The supporting roles are somewhat underexposed. It's not really memorable, but it's great viewing material on Netflix.
