A Jihad for Love plot
Documentary about deeply religious Muslims and Muslim women from different parts of the world who struggle with the combination of their faith and their sexual identity. For six years director Sharma, himself a homosexual and Muslim, traveled the world to record stories of other gay Muslims and Muslim women. The story of the openly gay imam Hendricks from South Africa, for example, and the experiences of Mazen, who was imprisoned in Egypt for two years. Mazen's offense: his sexuality. The title does not refer to an armed holy war, but to an internal religious struggle and the striving to follow the path of God. Sharma films this battle about faith and orientation in twelve countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Turkey. He usually films in secret because it is often not an option to ask the government for permission.
