L'Honneur d'un Capitaine plot

In a TV broadcast about 20 years of Algerian independence after the Algerian War, a French officer is accused of war crimes. The officer was killed in action in 1957. His widow starts a libel lawsuit, which leads to a reconstruction of the Algerian drama, of which she only learned something incidentally during the engagement to her husband.

Schoendoerffer defends his old comrades.

This time without the colouring that made his other films, and in particular the Willsdorff trilogy Dien Bien Phu - 317ème Section - Crabe Tambour so interesting and different. Of those three films, the motivation was perhaps more directly personal, while this film feels more like a final tribute to a comrade in arms.

In any case, it is clear that the film - like almost all of Schoendoerffer's films - is very personal, and it also occurred to me that one of the characters, one of the witnesses in court, looks exactly like Schoendoerffer's profile picture, including a three-piece suit and red tie. So that can't be a coincidence either.

It's a pity that there seems to be very little information to be found, and the copy I had without subtitles - in any language - was quite difficult to follow - my court French leaves a lot to be desired.

Furthermore, it remains a bit of a hypocrite all by itself. Yes, indeed, Schoendoerffer's hero, one of the incarnations of his old buddy Willsdorff is of course above reproach, a knight without a blemish on his escutcheon. But on the other hand, we also know that the French army went on an unprecedented rampage during the Algerian decolonization, and it seems a bit weak that 'someone else' did all that.

And at the same time, these kinds of things still play a role in France, very directly and very personally, and much more than we are used to in the Netherlands. In every village there is a monument 'Mort pour La France', and every year a ceremony is held there, with a speech by the mayor in the presence of a number of increasingly older men who are increasingly less mobile, can hardly lift their banner, but still have the thousand yard stare. You can't joke about that, I think.
