Strangers in the Night plot
Lonely and mentally weak Hilda Blake invents a daughter, whom she has to write letters to Marine Sergeant Johnny Meadows, who is seconded to the South Pacific. When Sergeant Meadows returns to the United States, he wants to visit his pen pal. Hilda tells him that "her daughter" has left. An acquaintance of Hilda tells Sergeant Meadows the truth, and Hilda kills her in a fit of rage. Hilda realizes that in order to cover up the crime, she must now also kill Meadows.
