kitsch.

I can imagine that this film has an audience, because Bassett is going for it. He tries to give the film a certain coolness, but whether that works depends mainly on how committed you are to the clichés used.

Solomon Kane isn't really my setting. Kitschy characters, lots of chivalry with mud, rain and men with heavy voices. On top of that, some sorcery. Western fantasy and roleplay happen so you have to love it. If you do then this is probably still a nice genre film, but I drowned in the seriousness and couldn't really find myself in the style of the film.

Rather nasty fights, stupid bad guys and a rude farmer of a main character. You are stuck with that for 100 minutes. It quickly became boring and besides some nice slomo intros and overly funny monologues there was not much to experience. Disappointing event.

1.5*

James Purefoy prepared very well for this medieval horror film and given the impressive cast, which includes Max von Sydow and Pete Postlethwaite, it is not surprising that the producers had high expectations. Unfortunately, the film flopped, and that's because the actors are saddled with the same clichés that we know from all those (often extremely cheap) ilk, including weak characterizations, too much focus on noisy action scenes, including bloodshed and too little for a cohesive or compelling story. . An interesting failure, but definitely not so interesting that you have to waste 100 minutes of your life on this.

Scored the blu-ray at the thrift store and curious partly because I think James Purefoy is an interesting actor, and yes every time I see the best man I think I would have liked to have seen him as James Bond, rather than Brosnan, but good.

From the outset, partly due to the reviews, it is clear that not too much can be expected from this film, and I mean content and depth in particular. The beginning is a good example where the character doesn't get any further than a few cliché one-liners, some tough roaring and the whole together with the soundtrack comes across hopelessly pompous and at the same time stiff and wooden. Pfoe...is my first feeling followed by the thought that this one will definitely go on sale.

But there is still a lot of improvement in the second part. The dialogues are still of Sesame Street level every now and then, but the whole thing seems to fit together better in terms of story, with the character Solomon and the music. It is clear that Solomon Kane is mainly visually oriented and the blu-ray succeeds in that quite well, although such a balrog is hideous. But a number of beautiful cinematic moments cannot be denied to the film, together with the beautiful nature. The art design also has some pretty good moments and of course a film never gets worse due to the presence of Rachel Evan-Wood. And oh ... the many clatter of weapons is quite nice.

Solomon Kane is of course far from being an Oscar winner, but within the framework of 'Sword and Sorcery' it is all fine for once. They seem to have had a trilogy in mind but dropped that idea after part 1, something that is understandable again. Yet for once Solomon Kane is doable.
