Smart People plot

"Sometimes the smartest people have the most to learn"

Widowed Professor Lawrence Wetherhold may be a genius and intellectually gifted, but when it comes to family life and emotion he is just as clumsy as anyone else. His daughter is an over-ambitious college student who threatens to follow in her father's hopeless footsteps, and his adopted brother has perfected the art of doing nothing. Even the Victorian Period that Lawrence specializes in can no longer propel him to great deeds and he is sleepwalking through his middle age. The encounter with a former student changes his outlook on life.

A nice combination of drama and humor, featuring an intellectual family with its fair share of (social) problems. Certainly not a high-flyer, but enjoyable viewing. Some nice dialogue, though it's a bit of a shame about the overly cheerful ending, which feels a bit out of place with the rest of the film. A good cast (although I'm certainly not a Sarah Jessica Parker fan), with Ellen Page and Thomas Hayden Church being the most notable.

A bit of a dull affair. An uninteresting relationship without any chemistry between Quaid and Parker. The grumpy old man gradually thaws, as he's done countless times, and better. This theme is a bit of a tired old fare, and nothing is added to it here.

Page and that uncle/Church are a bit more fun, but there's not enough going on with them. Page was great in Juno, which was made for this role. Here, her qualities don't really shine.

Failed movie.

I pulled this one out of the closet and didn't really have any expectations for it. I didn't think it was bad. Not really a comedy, not really a drama, more of a feature film.

The story wasn't that special, but I didn't find it boring either.

A fairly familiar cast: Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, although no one really stood out.

Well, not bad to have seen once, but nothing special either.
