"This is not just a story - it is based on brutal truth"

Deep in Malaya, as World War II draws to a close, men, women and children who were once taken by surprise by the Japanese invasion are held captive in the Blood Island detention camp. Was this story based on real events?

I can fully agree with what has already been said above, good exciting story, quite short but sufficient

I watched this one because it's a Hammer, but without reading up on it beforehand. I saw a film that focused on a Japanese concentration camp with British soldiers, supposedly based on a true story. As a film of its time, the emphasis was more on the drama and the interaction between Japanese guards and their prisoners than on the horror itself. Although the horror is also present, with brutal executions. The first hour of the film is primarily dialogue-driven, with the last 20 meters full of action. The action is well-paced and delivers exciting moments.

I later read that this film was heavily debated upon release because, by the standards of the time, it was considered an exploitation film about WWII. That shows how times have changed. For a modern viewer, this is a cleanly released film without any excesses. However, Hammer's reputation suffered from the criticism. They apparently later focused more on the fantasy genre. So, The Camp has a nice historical legacy and seems to me to be a lesser-known film today. Moreover, it wasn't shown on television for a very long time, and it took until 2009 for a DVD release.

Today it is no longer shocking, but it remains a solidly made low-budget film with some exciting moments and generally good acting.
