That'll Be the Day plot

Abandoned by his father when he was very young, Jim MacLaine (David Essex) seems to have inherited his father's restlessness and decides not to take his exams, leaving him able to forget about college. After a period of wandering around in useless jobs, he returns to his mother (Rosemary Leach), where he begins to wonder if life as a musician might be for him.

Reasonable film about a young man who has had enough of his life and school and makes a rigorous decision. The film is set in the late 50s and creates a nice nostalgic picture of the time (including the matching soundtrack). Here and there quite entertaining, but as a whole it doesn't have much substance and the main character is actually quite unsympathetic.

Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and David Essex in 1 film. Retro late 50's early 60's well shaped in the then English society of fairs, seaside resorts, dance halls and the working class vs. the student. Ultimately also a film about genetic determination linked to childhood trauma which is well expressed at the end. Also the enormous series of one night stands lead MacLaine to a renewed insight, which makes him make a conscious choice for his wife, well played by Ayres. Being decent is always present thanks to his intelligence. The insight should come... Essex scored a hit 1 year later '74 with Gonna make you a star..
