"It's great because it's human!"

Mary Colbrook is a poor widow with four children, ages 10 to 19. Realizing that she can no longer care for her children, she sends the oldest three children to their wealthy Aunt Caroline, while the youngest, Bill, stays with Mother. Bill catches the eye of the wealthy old Duchess Crosby who lives nearby.
