Ever since I first saw the trailer a year and a half ago, I was really looking forward to this movie. Director Im Kwon-taek is now 80 years old, and will undoubtedly have had more to do with death than many viewers of his films. Probably partly because of this he knows how to powerfully convey this terrible event.

Hwajang is not to make you happy, but it is an impressive film about love, career and death.

Subdued film about the struggle of a marketing director with his feelings towards his seriously ill wife on the one hand and a beautiful new subordinate on the other. A sensitive drama that does not shy away from sharing a handful of painfully intimate scenes between the man and his wife. The ending doesn't match what I expected (or rather hoped), but that's just me, of course.

Sung-ki Ahn once again proves his class as the thoughtful director and caring husband. Gyu-ri Kim (the new employee) and Ho-jung Kim (the terminally ill woman) have much less screen time, but are hardly inferior to him. A beautiful film from veteran director Kwon-taek Im.
