Monte Carlo plot

"As intimate as a lady's boudoir!"

Baroness Vera von Conti decides to go to Monte Carlo. She has no more than 10,000 francs and has fled from her future husband Prince Otto von Seibenehim. At a casino, Baron Rudolph Falliere spots the Baroness, and manages to get her to pet her for good luck. This makes Vera think Rudolph is a hairdresser and hires him. Rudolph falls in love with Vera and calls her every night, singing to her. Vera also falls in love with Rudolph, but has to fire him and marries someone else for financial reasons. One evening, Vera sees Rudolph sitting in the VIP lounge at the opera, and knows she's made a mistake!

Ernst Lubitsch brought the film musical a big step closer to coming of age with this entertaining, but statically filmed and slow musical comedy about Vera von Conti [Jeanette McDonald] who leaves her groom at the altar and travels to Monte Carlo with her servant Bertha [Zasu Pitts] in the hope of earning a nice little extra money. There she meets Rudolph [Jack Buchanan] with whom she enters into an unusual partnership.

McDonald was one of the most popular singers of the 1930s and the godforsaken Buchanan proves to be a capable antagonist, as his acting and singing are excellent. Despite the technical imperfections, Ernst Lubtisch deserves credit for the way he innovated by making the songs an integral part of the plot, something that has become standard in the musical genre! The musical intermezzos are the strongest moments.
