Chuckawalla, Nevada, 1947. Affluent and tough Fritzi Haller is the manager of 'Purple Sage', the only gambling palace in Chuckawalla. Fritzi does not want her spoiled, listless and also tough daughter Paula to make the same mistakes as she made in the past. Paula tours and shows off the latest Chrysler Convertible '47 model through Chuckawalla and the surrounding area. Local police officer Tom Hanson, who is in love with Paula, keeps turning a blind eye when she commits traffic violations. On one of her rides, Paula meets criminal gambler Eddie Bendix and his friend Johnny Ryan. Paula, who resembles Eddie's mysteriously killed first wife, falls in love with him and Eddie with her. Besides Tom, Fritzi, but also Eddie's friend Johnny, are not very happy about that. Because Eddie was part of her past, Fritzi asks Tom for help.
