Vinyan plot

Janet and Paul lost their son during the tsunami. Six months later, Janet thinks she sees him on a video. Paul is hesitant, but eventually decides to go on a search with Janet. With a suitcase full of money, they buy the help of the criminal Thaksin Gao. He accompanies them and so begins the quest that leads through the dangerous Thai and Burmese waters to the jungle. However, Paul trusts Thaksin Gao less and less and no longer knows what to do with his wife, who seems to be increasingly succumbing to her emotions.

Very strong sketch about the madness and despair during the grief process of the two parents.

The film reminded me a lot of Irréversisble at certain moments. Of course a bit of the same kind of genre, but also a number of scenes, including those in that nightclub, showed quite a lot of similarities, although I think Irréversible is ultimately the more powerful film.

Visually very beautiful every now and then, although I was not as overwhelmed as I had expected. It was especially the use of color that stood out very nicely in certain scenes. The great strength of this film as far as I'm concerned is the representation of the mental madness in which the main characters (especially the woman) find themselves, which is well enhanced by some very impressive, nightmarish scenes, strong soundtrack and good acting. Was really taken by the film and actually, although the run-up to the search was already quite short, I would have liked it a little shorter and a little more insanity could have been tucked in. That's pretty much the only point of criticism.

Very impressive movie. 4.5*

A remarkably low score. And I don't know if it comes from people who expected a 2nd Calvaire, or from viewers who thought they saw a blockbuster and are not familiar with the direction of du Welz. Less crazy than Calvaire, which was also a strong film, but a genre that I don't like. Then I liked this Vinyan better.

The story of a couple who lost their son in a tsunami. They don't know what really happened to it, and that weighs on the processing of their loss. This also plays a psychological role and is beautifully displayed by du Welz. The film has an oppressive atmosphere that gradually becomes more depressed. Hope and denial go hand in hand. The search for their son is not an adventure, but an act of desperation. This atmosphere is emphasized both visually and musically. The ratio changes with time...

The aftermath of the tsunami in South-East Asia... Besides the countless dead, also many missing. It must be terrible not knowing what happened to your loved one, especially if it is a minor child. When a mother seems to recognize her son after seeing a chance report, she and her partner search for the location.

You can feel the film maintains a certain dark gloomy tone. There is no immediate happy ending. Their hope or despair is exasperating. And as a rational viewer you feel that they are being cheated on all sides. And yet you pay, and you keep paying...

And then that ending. Disconcerting and right in your face. Excellent editing and cinematography. The atmosphere is also well maintained. Nice!
