In Spain, a wealthy family mourns the death of one of its relatives. Maria, wife of prominent landowner Antonio Aguilar has died of an alleged heart attack. Her teenage daughter Miria develops muscle cramps and contractions during the funeral, which terrifies everyone and traumatizes the girl. Father and daughter live in a well-maintained old castle, together with the half-paralyzed Antionio, Miria's brother, who is in a wheelchair, and their housekeeper, who is a nun. The incident at the funeral left Miria completely devastated. She is depressed and confused. When the superstitious servant Isidorio begins to imagine and spread the word, the situation for the family does not get any better.
