One of my favorite movies.

Look at the varying responses here.

Personally for me one of the best movies with an animal in the lead role. Don't say a scary animal movie, or something Jaws like.

Jaws is much simpler in terms of story and above all, a completely different story, but does not have to be better or less.

I thought the grief of the male orca for his partner and child was beautifully told: it reminded me of how elephants mourn..

It comes across as very pure.

What then follows is the hunt of (shore)fish for fisherman. The why of both parties is also well told.

A timeless story about love, hate, revenge and understanding, resignation to fate.

But if you just want to see monsters wrecking people, this might not be your movie

An attempt to piggyback on the success of Jaws, that's what this film mostly comes across to me. Oh, there was already a book - well, it was definitely inspired by the great example of Herman Melville. But of course you can kill just about any story with a fish and a man with that.

The movie is certainly not bad. But not really good either, there's just a little too little coming out and the images aren't really good either - at least not by today's standards. And similar is Richard Harris as Captain Nolan - close, but no Ahab. What remains then is the always timeless music of Ennio Morricone, and the mysterious aura of Charlotte Rampling. And that's enough.
