Three times there are super-exciting (and super-deadly) game rounds in the film. That was enough for me to lift the film to three stars. Those game rounds left me with a bitter aftertaste. How participants were beaten to death using gloves with iron spikes on them.... brrrr... Well done. I found that the film slumped a bit between game rounds. I thought I recognized the BMW headquarters as well as the apartments around the nearby Olympic Stadium in Munich as the location where a number of outdoor scenes in the film took place.

Still pretty cool dystopian SF film in which multinationals have taken the place of countries and the extremely violent game Rollerball is used to keep the masses under their thumb. Beautifully designed; especially the sports arena where most of the action takes place looks great. James Caan is supercoolly charismatic in the lead role. The scenes around the matches are not always interesting, but all in all I thought this was a cool movie.

Sometime in September this movie turned 45, so wanted to take a chance. After all, it wasn't that I knew a whole lot about the film, just that a remake that was soon to be forgotten was made.

I have to say that the story struggled to hold the attention. Caan is not doing badly, maybe just a bit too cool and apathetic. At least I had no urge to chant his name. Actually, not one character really grabbed me.

The matches do look great and are really the highlights of the film. It sounds silly sometimes, but that's what it sounds like at the time. Lots of stunts and a bit of blood and well filmed. But it won't be enough, I'll probably forget the story in a few weeks.
