Mary Hagen lives in a small town in Ohio and attends Gordon High School. For years there have been rumours, whispers and gossip about who her real parents are. When Tom Bates returns to town, he takes over the house and practice that Judge Marrivale left him after his death. Because Tom has been gone for several years, this leads to even more gossip and Mary also believes that Tom is her father. However, the popular Ken Freneau loves Mary dearly, but his family and friends keep telling him that "she's none of them." Julia, a teacher at the school, encourages Mary, but Mary cannot find peace in what she is doing without feeling bad. Tom knows the answer to her true identity, but he is silent as a grave for now.
