A great film in which a psychopathic killer uses a time machine. Two different, familiar stories are interwoven in an original way. This results in an adventurous and entertaining film that never bores. Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen didn't just fall in love in the film.

Watched it again, but this time via the truly beautiful Blu-ray release.

Beautiful!

I still think the film is as good as the first time I saw it.

The story remains well thought out, as Lakte also said.

This is a damn good film. A fantasy with an original idea that's very well-developed. Wells made powerful predictions throughout his life that became reality later in the 20th century. The author here, with a wink, assumed that he was so visionary because he had seen the future himself.

1893: The identity of Jack the Ripper is known; the man is a doctor, close to science fiction author and inventor H.G. Wells, and escapes justice by traveling to 1979 San Francisco in Wells's new time machine. Wells pursues him to prevent him from continuing his crimes there. The leap back in time is, incidentally, well-executed. This sounds like nonsense squared, yet the film easily pulls it off, including the humor. The Ripper brings the prostitutes to the disco dance floor, and Wells falls in love with a bank clerk. The classic story is given a modern twist, and Wells's encounter with modern times isn't presented as a farce. Thanks to his progressive views and scientific intelligence, he quickly adapts. The only downside is the dull Mary Steenburgen, who seems to have absolutely no spark of life in her. McDowell disagreed, as he married her. In any case, this is a film that Wells himself would have watched with a big smile if he were still alive.
