My mother made me watch this one because it was the movie in her time, and it showed. In the beginning I was moved by the love story, and I especially liked the pieces in the snow. But towards the end it became less and less, and towards the end the whole film suddenly turned and the happy and sweet story suddenly became a lot heavier and more pathetic. The music also contributed well, what a melodramatic melody, but very beautiful. I understand that this film attracted a lot of crying women, but unfortunately I couldn't quite get into it. (also maybe because my mother was all the time of ' ooh yes then that came ' and ' do you like it Rianneke'?

Still, it wasn't a bad film at all, and certainly fun to watch. 3.0*

Adorable young man falls in love with poor girl… with a twist. A theme that (also in reversed form) has come up in my opinion countless times in the film world. That's why I never understood why this film was such a mega hit worldwide at the time (1970). Or it should be that the film leaned on Ryan O'Neal's newfound fame as the superstar of the television series “Peyton Place” (it was a lot quieter on the streets at the time on those TV shows). What was not known at the time, but now we know that they seem to make these kinds of romantic tragedies almost continuously in Japan and South Korea.

Anyway, the film hasn't gotten any more sincere over the years. It is and remains an overwrought tearjerker, although I am usually not averse to it.
What remains is the beautiful soundtrack. I think the signature melody of this film is one of the most beautiful pieces of film music I know. And Ray Milland is of course the right actor to play such a hypothermic father.
