Sean Ellis could visually blow me away with Cashback. Curious what this 'The Broken' would become. It has become a breathtaking film with again the visual attention that the genre needs. It reminds me a bit of Hitchcock mixed with Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Not only visually, but also the well-known tricks of leaving little effective in the picture or the use of little music (only where necessary) creates an exciting atmosphere that gives every sound and every movement extra energy.

The film has to rely mainly on the atmosphere and its visual strength. The only drawback is that Ellis builds up that atmosphere nicely, but doesn't increase it towards the end. You stay hungry and I miss the necessary proverbial sledgehammer blow or genius twist to really make it a hit.

Nevertheless a topper in the genre and this film makes me long for more films from Ellis. Too bad about the low score here, because he certainly doesn't deserve it.

This thriller starts very slow and slowly builds up a certain tension. You know that something is not right and you are anxiously wondering what. For certain people, the film was clearly too boring, because part of it had even left the room. The denouement was disappointing for me

A thriller that does not rely on the shock effects and is therefore more of a subtle thriller.

Not exactly a movie that you must have seen, but still worth watching if they show it on TV or something.

Nice Ellis.

But as is often the case, films can't get any higher than the 'just solid' predicate. Here again a deserving piece of film, but to be a topper Ellis should have pulled out a little more.

The dark atmosphere does its job; the sinister soundtrack and languid pacing can be counted among the most prominent factors. Once the climax - the nightmare sequence - has been reviewed, the film is no longer so uplifting, but oh well, the atmosphere itself remains consistent. Just hoped for some more real outliers.

They should have deleted the obligatory 'twist', the so-called 'moment suprême' for all I care. Didn't think the core of the film made a huge contribution, nor did I fall out of my chair in bewilderment. Would have preferred something more mysterious, personally. The cast continued to do well.

In itself a successful film, mainly because of the eerie atmosphere. And kudos for the playing time, it wasn't a second too long. Not great, but I think it's the best I've seen from Ellis so far. Hangs between 3.0 * and 3.5 *, but for now I keep it at a spacious 3.0 *.
