Joe Barron (Glenn Ford) is a police detective whose wife Lisa (Elke Sommer) inherits a hefty sum of money from her father. They spend a lot of money, but quickly get into debt as a result. When a local doctor shoots a burglar, Joe is ordered to investigate. He finds out that the doctor is involved in drug trafficking and keeps a fair amount of money earned in his safe. This is Joe's chance to get out of debt, but his partner finds out about his plan and demands some of the loot. Things get even weirder when Joe learns that the shot man was married to Rosalie (Rita Hayworth), whom he had been in love with for years.
