In 2019, a massive disease has transformed almost the entire world population into vampires. One minus: the supply of humans is limited and due to a drastic blood shortage, the underprivileged among the vampires begin to transform into bat-like monstrosities. It's up to scientist Edward (Ethan Hawke) to fabricate a blood substitute, but when he comes into contact with an underground human group and discovers a possible cure for vampirism, he too becomes a target of his own organization.

Yes, he is indeed quite original at times, and also the best Spierig brothers I've seen. Jigsaw and Winchester couldn't convince me, and this one could. The visuals in particular were beautiful and a fairly strong start.
Story is sometimes a bit too cliché and some effects don't look very good. It's not exciting either, but it's certainly entertaining. Many well-known actors who in turn do quite well and quite strong scenes here and there.
Too bad that the second part weakens a bit, because the start was pretty good.

I expected less from this movie (because the whole vampire thing has kind of been milked out about love movies lately), but this movie surprised me at how well it was executed! 4*
