La Hora Fría plot

After a major war involving chemical weapons and nuclear bombs, a group of eight people live isolated in crumbling underground installations. They cannot leave the complex and they are in a constant state of vigilance. The food supply is running low and they urgently need medicines and ammunition, but to find it they have to leave their safe area. What lurks outside, however, is so menacing that no one dares speak of it.

I once saw this film in the cinema when it came out, funnily enough I remember it well, which is positive in itself.

The script in particular was interesting. Enclosed in a complex, a number of people, including two children, try to survive in difficult circumstances. They're trying to keep out the people infected by the chemical weapons. However, it is not safe inside either, at night when the temperature drops, during The Cold Hour, they have to take shelter in their rooms, because then other dangerous creatures that normally hide appear in the complex.

The film gives a simple, dark and claustrophobic impression of the complex and the corridors and spaces within it, and of what takes place there. Nice mix between science fiction and horror, definitely recommended if you like both genres. Furthermore, it is not a great film, but not a bad film either.

Strange Spanish SF.

It also seems like a fairly standard story that seems to have been lifted straight from 80s B-science fictions; a group of people, say families (?) live in an underground bunker because life above has been eradicated and has become a no go area. Some elements and TV clips shown here would almost make you think that this is some kind of pre-Cold War film. In the bunker we first follow their way of life, then every night they have to take into account "The Cold Hour", a kind of nitrogen increase in the corridors of the bunker, and eventually they also have to deal with a kind of creatures that are quite contagious. Then a bit of fleeing from the creatures, then taking out the weapons and fighting the creatures in the manner of Aliens, and then the end... which is a complete turn of 180 degrees, and it was quite successful too. .

Still, as said, a strange film with a fairly low budget and yet a surprising premise that ensures that the backstory is actually not applicable at all. Strange!

3.5*
