"A superhero like no other"

Enzo Ceccotti falls into the Tiber River in Rome, Italy. The water is so polluted with radioactive waste that he is left with something. To be precise: super powers. Enzo sees this as a reward for the fact that he never became a major criminal. Meanwhile, he meets the sweet Alessia, who changes his life. He uses his powers to chase a mobster called 'The Gypsy'.

Nice!

This superhero film is as lighthearted as it is grim. But it doesn't hit like a punch... You could almost describe it as a feel-good film.

However, don't expect a gigantic action spectacle in the style of Michael Bay... This film manages to remain quite solid and small-scale in terms of budget... contrary to what the poster suggests.
The connection is typical... A fleeing criminal jumps into the Tiber and comes into contact with a certain substance that has been dumped there. The side effects are painful and feverish and the next day he suddenly has no more problems... however... except for a few abnormal powers. The funny thing is that he both uses and abuses it. So whether Enzo is a criminal or a hero... who knows.

He catches the eye of both his neighbor and a group of gang members who demand something from his neighbor... This turns out to be a wonderfully light, dryly funny, but also striking action film in which the actors all have their charms... The gypsy in particular is a funny bad guy. Full of memorable moments... Take for example: That scene with the transvestite.

Call me Jeeg Robot doesn't bore for a second... and despite the low budget film is still a great movie. Too bad it's so hard to find on dvd.

And now the Netherlands should come up with a superhero film... But that will probably be another kindergarten-level film.

Nice.

Give us an Italian superhero film. Italy is not the country that immediately comes to mind when you think of smooth genre cinema, and that can sometimes be seen a little bit, but in general Mainetti still manages to create an entertaining film, with its own face.

The superhero aspect is rather limited. A short origin story ala Spider-Man makes a criminal supernaturally strong. However, the film is not so interested in the classic superhero stuff, ultimately it is more of a crime film in which one (and eventually two) character is a lot stronger.

Visually it looks quite smooth, only some effect shots are a bit on the cheap side. A bit strange use of smoke/dust sometimes to fake impact, but it often remains mainly faking. But that's actually the only point of criticism, otherwise the film is neatly and modernly shot. Quite brutal and coarse too, actors do their job properly and there is also quite a bit of humor hidden in it.

Everything is there for 110 minutes of nice, atypical genre entertainment. Like watching an Italian Luc Besson film. Hopefully this film will shake others in Italy a little awake.

Mwa.

They Call me Jeeg is in some ways a very interesting film that often reminded me of a Necrostorm film in terms of stylization, but without the bizarre dose of gore. The playful effects that are edited with a lot of passion reminded me of it, but despite this film having a bit more money I prefer Necrostorm.

This film is a combination of action and drama, but the drama aspect still overpowers the action. The limited action scenes make this film worth watching, but everything that is explored on the sentimental level is hardly captivating. They Call me Jeeg clearly gets his ideas from other films that do not work them out in a better way themselves. This film mainly does it more extensively, which only makes the result itself more tiring.

The acting is nice and Santamaria plays a solid protagonist. I also thought Marinelli was a nice appearance as the crazy villain. The pity is that both characters are so different from each other. Where Santamaria is a serious and grumpy protagonist, Marinelli is an enormously theatrical, almost comic book-like appearance. Individually nice characters, together they work a bit less.

You get the strong feeling during this film that it wants to deviate from other superhero films, and then actually follows their example exactly with more drama. The action is also somewhat more charming, and especially smaller, but the slow pace in between and the large dose of sentiment make the two hours that the film lasts not a pleasant sitting. I especially thought it took a very long time.

The finale is still fun, and this film is certainly not bad, but where other people like it when a story is deepened, I thought it all took terribly long and got in the way of the nicer parts with action. Jeeg turned out to be a disappointment after the end, and that was a shame, but not a huge disappointment, which is why the rating still ends up at a 2.5*.
