Sisters Sal and Ray live in an orphanage in the countryside. The girls both have one wish: Sal desperately wants a puppy, while her younger sister Ray wants nothing more than to be adopted by a family and given a real 'home'. Sal's dream comes true when one day she finds an abandoned dog in the woods. She names the animal Chestnut and takes him with her. When the girls find out that same day that they have been adopted, Sal's greatest wish also comes true. But then it turns out that their new home, a very nice apartment in New York City, is forbidden for dogs! Will the kids be able to hide the rapidly growing Great Dane, or will they have to say goodbye to their big friend forever?
