Nice kick-off to horror challenge 2018!

The star of the film is of course the monkey. A big compliment to whoever came up with all these tricks and certainly for their patience. The story builds up well to the climax, which was quite okay. The acting wasn't too bad and didn't bother us at all. The downside is that there are too few horror elements present to really increase the tension. The kills are indeed well done and sometimes even invisible. A bit of a shame, otherwise the film could even get a higher score. I rounded up to 3.5 stars since my score is 6.5/10, but the monkey deserves this.

Romero's first studio film and - although almost completely stripped of its typical horror characteristics - it certainly does not stand out negatively in his oeuvre. It marked the beginning of three films that delve a little more into the psyche of an individual (invariably the male protagonist) instead of his famous social criticism. Yet it is not surprising that people expect something more (/different), especially when it comes to (gore) effects. With heavyweights such as Savini and Kirshoff at the helm, a lot is possible, but the power of Monkey Shines comes from a completely different source. Strongly written, directed and classically exciting with a long tension and natural progression of the characters. All very believable and skillfully executed. Not very uplifting, but quite a few sharp edges seem to have been lost (studio, eh). Image quality of the new Eureka! Blu-ray release is sublime by the way.

I thought it was a very original idea; At the time I found this film very exciting. It's unbelievable what you can get a capuchin monkey to do, although strong editing also plays a part. There are also some sins against spatial logic. This way the monkey knows where Allan's ex and the doctor are and he finds his way back from the lab to home and so on... So nonsense. The finale was quite intense.
