This film had been on my "to see" list for a while, but because there were several references to 964-Pinocchio and Tetsuo - films that I absolutely did not appreciate - I kept putting off watching this film. Completely unjustified in retrospect, although in the last half hour my appreciation for this film plummeted considerably. I thought that part was quite over the top and also very gross at times. For me, this film mainly depends on the scenes that took place in the "Delirium" nightclub. I thought the soundtrack was phenomenal, but the violence was occasionally too intense. I sometimes thought of the films of Gaspar Noé. But voilá, this film is a horror film in which we have a view into the hallucinations and nightmares of the main character, so it is all functional.

I didn't think the quality of this film was very good, but maybe that is due to the copy I watched. Moreover, I got the film - with English subtitles - from the internet. This film is also easy to watch without subtitles, because firstly the dialogues are very sparse and secondly this is a film that relies mainly on the audiovisual. The story is completely subordinate to this.

3.5*

btw Without the last half hour this film of mine would have scored at least a 4.0*.

I was very disappointed when I reviewed it.

The first time I saw this I was particularly impressed by Iskanov's will to make something special out of it. I saw at the time that it was put together fairly cheaply, but creativity won out over amateurism.

When revised, some of that impact disappears, giving the amateurish character of the film a little more of the upper hand. And since it was filmed really poorly at times (cheap look, bad CG, poor timing), those 120 minutes were sometimes a bit difficult to get through.

There are still scenes where it all works. Where the vague filters in combination with the hyper editing and industrial soundtrack come together to create an alienating film. But too often the soundtrack does not flow well with the image, the effects look too cheap or the editing is not sharp enough.

Budget will certainly be a factor, although I have seen a lot of films that can deliver a professional result with very little. Iskanov doesn't really belong to that group, I'm afraid. This of course remains a special film and Iskanov's vision is fine, but the design and finish leave too much to be desired.

3.0*

Director Andrey Iskanov himself indicated that one of his directorial goals is to break as many taboos as possible, which probably led to the high experimentation of Visions of Suffering. I can only applaud and encourage the fact that Iskanov is keen to put himself on the map by coming up with an extremely unusual result, but unfortunately this results in a high number of directorial failures. The poor CGI in particular is quite a disruption, making the frequent action and horror scenes look anything but successful. By the way, it rains in almost every scene in Iskanov's world creation, fortunately the windows remain nice and dry from the computer precipitation. These kinds of cinematic mistakes are the general impression that a film like this unfortunately leaves on me. The wild camera movements, aggressive soundtrack and harsh editing regularly create an uneasy atmosphere and the dream sequences in particular are very successful, but the rather silly way of experimenting with computer effects kills much of the same atmosphere. The running time of over 2 hours weighs heavily after a while, but the director certainly cannot take away the enthusiasm. Moreover, the practical effects are very successful.
